“The Priestly Blessing,” also known as “Birkat Kohanim,” is a two-handed gesture used in a Jewish ritual in which descendants of the biblical rabbi, Aaron recite a special blessing over the congregation which provides a divine form of protection to the community. This hand sign is often found on the headstones in Jewish cemeteries. In 1966, Lenoard Nemoy adopted a single-handed version of this gesture in order to signify the Vulcan greeting, “Live Long and Prosper” on Star Trek.
