"Carl Breuer and Sons" is the name of my family’s former Czech textile printing business. In 1897 my great-great-grandfather Carl, with sons Felix and Ernst began the business, which included a factory in Bohemia. In 1942, their factory, along with all other Jewish-owned property in German-occupied areas, was seized and sold to Nazi-approved owners, my family members were killed and the product of their work was lost. Through my recent visits to the factory, and by locating its archive of samples at the nearby Czech Textile Museum, I have acquired a rich collection of primary source material in the form of scans and photographs. The discovery and research into this subject has opened a window to the material world of my lost European family. This project has a provided me with an opportunity to reexamine my feelings about this history and create a physical connection that only art can provide.
